Artemis Fowl is book 1 of 8 of the Artemis Fowl series targeted for 9-12 year olds. Artemis Fowl is a twelve year old boy genius who uses his genius for crime. In book 1, Artemis bullies a fairy into giving up her secrets and then kidnaps another fairy, holding her for ransom.
I’ve known about the premise of these books for a long time and always thought it was brilliant, but I never understood why they didn’t get too much fame. Now that I finally read this book, I sort of understand why. The book is o.k. at best. Personally I think the author got lazy in many aspects of the book, breaking conventional writing rules to make his life easier.
I also must say that Artemis is a despicable human being. I know at some point in the series he will turn out to be a great boy but as of right now he is pure evil. Strong dislike.
Though I must say the twist at the end of the book made it all worthwhile. How Artemis defeated the fairies time-stop magic was, well, genius. The author foreshadowed it very well and I feel like a fool for not being able to figure it out myself. I shall have to read the next book in the series just to pit my own intelligence against that of the authors. This time I shall not fail.
