Before They Are Hanged is book 2 in Joe Abercrombie’s The Blade Itself trilogy. You may or may not know this but book 2s of a trilogy have a pretty bad rap for being boring. I don’t know if I would call Before They Are Hanged boring, but it certainly didn’t have me as excited as book 1.
You may remember me saying in my book 1 review that Abercrombie is more known for his characters than his plot. Well, since we’ve been introduced to all the characters already in book 1, it’s hard to bring anything new to the characters for book 2. Perhaps you could argue some characters developed from book to book, but for the most part the characters who were hissing “effing pinks” in book 1 were hissing “effing pinks” in book 2 as well. Yeah yeah some characters developed obvious love interests for each other, whatever.
Well this book is a necessary bridge between book 1 and book 3. As I mentioned previously, I care not for the story. But since I already ready the first 2 books, I really have no choice but to read book 3 as well.
