Revenge is a dish best served cold, or at least it is in Joe Abercrombie’s Best Served Cold. Monzcarro Murcatto has been betrayed by everyday and now seeks revenge. It matters not to her that all of Styria plummets into chaos because of her lust for vengeance.
This one line from the book sums up the story pretty well,
“Shivers didn’t reckon he’d last ’til lunch, but he guessed that meant more lunch for everyone else.”
Basically kill or be killed. Loyalties mean nothing if someone is will to pay more for your services.
Truthfully it took me a looooong time to finish this book; it wasn’t even that long (~650 pages). I had a hard time getting through the first part of this book because I kept thinking, “this is just a Kill Bill copy cat”. But I got over quick enough and finished the book.
I understand Joe Abercrombie has better books out, namely The First Law trilogy, but I wanted to read one of his stand alone books first just to get a taste of whether I liked the author or not. Good book definitely, but not really the high fantasy style that I so enjoy. The book is categorized under fantasy for a lack of a better genre to put it under more than anything.
Entertaining no doubt, but not really an edge of your seat type of book. Straight forward from start to finish.
